Welcome to No.322 squadron

As the oldest operational squadron in the Royal Netherlands Air Force, No. 322 Squadron has a long and colourful history stretching back as far as the early years of World War II when it was formed as the RAF’s first all-Dutch squadron.

His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard was largely responsible for arranging the training of Dutch personnel at flying training schools in the UK. Prince Bernhard himself received his first flying lesson with No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School at Hatfield on 23 September 1940 in a Tiger Moth, and his wings on 9 May 1941. The Prince became the driving force behind the formation of an all Dutch squadron within the RAF, and in March 1942 a proposal was made to the Air Ministry to create a Dutch flight within a British squadron. This subsequently grew into an all-Dutch squadron as more pilots and technicians became available.
